1876 train depot
Former Rhinebeck & Connecticut train depot & New York Central caboose in Copake, NY
In collaboration with an intrepid property owner and train enthusiast (follow @copakedepot), we are deep into planning for the rehabilitation and adaptive reuse of these two structures. The depot – one of the last remnants of the rail network that used to deliver local agricultural products to the greater region – fell into heavy disrepair after decades of disuse. The caboose – purchased on the internet! – is a recent arrival. No infrastructure (septic, water, electricity) currently exists on the site.
Nearby Noster Kill creates a sensitive wetland site for the historic structures, so we must work closely with the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation and the Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, as well as the Town of Copake and Columbia County Department of Health, to obtain permits for:
- Full interior and exterior rehabilitation of the depot and caboose for residential use*
- Restoration of missing train platforms
- New septic system
- Driveway and parking area (gravel)
- Utility connections (electric, water)
*Consistent with the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation. Historic tax credits will be pursued. To greatest extent possible, existing materials and features will be retained or replaced in kind.
