We are preservationists, planners, designers, storytellers, and lifelong learners who care passionately about the integrity of our environment and helping others appreciate and benefit from an authentic experience of place. The substance of place is old buildings. We believe, unabashedly, that they are worth preserving.
Worth Preserving is a mission-driven company established to preserve and reuse old buildings—we choose to describe them more judiciously as “properties of character”—in the historic Hudson Valley region. Our goal is to unlock the potential of properties that others have neglected, overlooked, mistreated, and misunderstood.
We acquire, rehabilitate, and return properties of character to active duty serving their communities. Worth Preserving especially targets “hinge” properties—buildings with potential to create a positive ripple effect. We work with local experts—carpenters, roofers, plasterers, painters, masons, plumbers, electricians, landscapers, and makers—to fix buildings inside and out to high standards of preservation and functionality. We don’t just “spiff them up”, and we don’t use BandAids. Sometimes this approach costs more in the short term, but it’s worth it.
Worth Preserving also provides ongoing property stewardship, plus best-practice resources to help fellow caretakers of old buildings. Old buildings are like children—we never stop worrying about them. Full of joy and surprises, they require steady attention and care at every stage. Again, they’re worth it.
In rehabilitation, stewardship and sharing, we aspire to tread as lightly as possible on the natural environment. There’s a saying that the “greenest” building is the one that’s already there. (Fact: construction and demolition debris accounts for one-quarter of our nation’s landfill.) Starting in 2020, we are doubling down on our efforts to use earth-friendly materials, recycle everything we can, and support those in our community who do the same. Stay tuned…
